Sunscreen December 2017

You may be aware of media reports regarding several sunscreen products that failed testing by Consumer NZ, including Cancer Society’s own Everyday Sunscreen Lotion SPF50+, 4 hours Water Resistant product which tested at SPF40+

The Cancer Society remains committed to reducing the risk of skin cancer for all New Zealanders, thus we are currently investigating why the Consumer NZ testing has returned results different to ours.

Cancer Society products are safe to use, our producers test these products in an approved and recognised facility in the USA to ensure they meet the standard claimed on the label. Our products are also subject to vigorous standards that ensure they meet the claims on the label, including certification by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, which is a part of the Australian Government’s Department of Health.

We recommend that New Zealanders use a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF30+ alongside other Sunsmart measures including a wearing wide brimmed hat, a shirt, sunglasses and seeking shade when the UV is high.
